Mind the Gap: mentoring GenZ their expectations vs. what managers are actually offering
I’m currently completing some research into the challenges and opportunities of integrating young talent into the modern workplace.
One insight really stood out:
➡️ 86% of young talent are actively seeking support from their managers
➡️ Yet only 13% of managers dedicate time to coaching and mentoring
And perhaps most telling:
➡️ Just 22% of young talent believe their managers promote a positive, inclusive culture
At first glance, this feels worrying. But I actually see this as a reason for optimism.
Most managers care and want to support their people.
They’re just stretched, under-trained, and often promoted without the capacity or tools to coach effectively.
This is where organisations have a real opportunity.
By complementing line management with external coaches and mentors, businesses can:
Give young talent the developmental support they’re asking for
Relieve pressure on managers
Create cultures where learning, inclusion and growth are shared responsibilities
It’s not about replacing managers — it’s about supporting the whole system to work better.
