Our Research Paper on Gen Z in the workplace is out now

We recently published our research paper "Generation Z in the Workplace: Closing the Expectation Gap - How to integrate and maximise the potential of this generation"

This paper unpacks the challenges facing Gen Z (in this case the adult population born 1997 and later) and their employers as the inter-generational cultural gap ever widens.

The research shows us that this generation possesses a strong sense of purpose, cultural awareness and intuition. Coupled with native digital skills, this makes them as asset to an employer - they can disrupt and see into the future better than older generations. However, these skills often come with some 'baggage' - underdeveloped human skills, impatience and social norms which older generations often find hard to handle. As a result of this, employers are often overlooking their potential leading to a culture of job hopping and side hustles.

Paradoxically, this generation are hungry for personal growth and look for leaders who can coach them, with a preference for more collaborative, non-hierarchical leadership. In fact our research shows us that 86% seek coaching and mentoring from managers yet only 13% receive it. 89% say purpose is essential for job satisfaction with 44% quitting jobs that didn't offer it.

Employers that, therefore offer meaningful outcome based work, relatable managers and opportunities for personal development are the ones that will maximise the talents of those early in their careers. Essentially more human purpose-led business seem to be the look of the future.

Employers, educators, and policymakers must collaborate to redesign pathways into work that prioritise human skills, wellbeing, and continuous learning alongside technical competence. Leaders must have the time, skills, and mindset to coach rather than control, and organisations must re-examine outdated structures that no longer serve a modern workforce.
